Overview
17 April 2012The Molteno Formation (upper Karoo Supergroup) hosts the coal in the Eastern Cape region and is bounded by the Elliot Formation at the top and the Beaufort Group at the base. In the north-eastern part of the Eastern Cape Province, coal occurs sporadically over an area of approximately 4,400 km2 extending from west of Aliwal North through Molteno, Sterkstroom, Dordrecht, Indwe, Cala, Gubenxa and Maclear.
There are three coal seams in this region, the Guba, Indwe and Molteno.
Based on the extensive drilling Elitheni have thus far engaged in, it appears the two seams of most value to Elitheni are the Guba and Indwe seams. The coal ranges from a higher ash thermal or power station type coal, to a higher value anthracite.
According to the specification sheet below Elitheni will be mining and beneficiating according to these three specifications.[Click to download] Overview
